Career

Following his stint at schoolboy football with Cherry Orchard, Clarke began his senior career with St. Patrick's Athletic before a loan move to Dublin City in 2003 where he was part of the Vikings squad that won the First Division title and achieved promotion to the Premier Division that season.[1] He had further spells with Dundalk and Kildare County before he joined Shamrock Rovers at the beginning of the 2006 season. He was among five players who made the switch from Kildare to the South Dublin club at that time - Ger O’Brien, Ray Kenny, Gareth Cooney and Robbie Shiels.

In his first season with Shamrock Rovers he formed part of an impressive back four who gave away just thirteen goals during the league campaign, a club record. Clarke won a First Division winners medal that season. He missed just one game throughout the 2006 season – away to Dundalk – the crucial goal he scored in the FAI Cup quarter final away to Athlone Town proved that his talents are not just confined to defence. In his two seasons at Rovers Robbie made a total of 69 appearances scoring the aforementioned goal.

Following his successful spell at Shamrock Rovers, Clarke moved to Waterford United in 2008[2] before helping Drogheda United retain their Premier Division status in 2009. Clarke was released by Drogheda at the end of the 2009 season and he subsequently joined Shelbourne for their 2010 First Division campaign.[3] At Shelbourne, Clarke struggled for fitness and despite numerous outings for Shelbourne's A Championship reserve team, he never made a competitive appearance for Shelbourne before his release by the club on 17 August 2010.[4]

Clarke returned to League of Ireland football in June 2011, signing for his former club Drogheda United. His second debut for Drogheda came against Bohemians on 24 June 2011. He started left-back and Drogheda lost 2-0.
